American Phoenix

Heroes of the Pentagon on 9/11

“That day, I saw humanity at its best and worst. Humanity doesn’t have race, creed, or color—not when you look into the very souls of people.” —Christopher Braman, Army Sgt. 1st Class (Ret.)

The terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, were intended to tear apart the fabric of our country and our democracy. Instead, this brazen act served to show the world the heart of a nation and the true meaning of “united we stand.” The heroes at the Pentagon were extraordinary civilians and soldiers who made decisions to sacrifice their own safety to render aid to complete strangers. Twenty years later, these stories serve as a reminder of what it truly means to be American.

Meticulously researched and told with respect and reverence, this book sheds light on the remarkable individuals and events of that day. Starting from the date the builders of the Pentagon broke ground on September 11, 1941, and culminating in the national Pentagon Memorial dedication in 2008, this is a tribute to those who sacrificed everything so that others might live.

Praise for American Phoenix

“Like the unforgettable day it so vividly commemorates, American Phoenix combines hope and horror, courage and carnage, inspiration and devastation. With the crucial assistance of his brother Ben (one of the heroic first responders who saved lives at the stricken Pentagon), Lincoln Starnes provides an account of what we lost as well as what we gained. This fine book provides perspective on the everyday heroes and patriots who keep this amazing nation the last, best hope of earth.” —Michael Medved, syndicated radio host, best-selling author of The American Miracle

“A vivid and detailed portrayal of the heroic soldiers and citizens who rescued and recovered friends and coworkers at the Pentagon. These moving stories shed new light on the tragedy and miracles that happened that day. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down.”—James A. Cozine, Major General, US Army (Ret.)

Mark of the Kite

The Life and Legacy of Ronald W. Starnes Master Cabinetmaker 1933 – 2002

Dr. Ronald W. Starnes (1933–2002) was one of the last of a generation of period furniture makers who learned their trade through the apprentice system. The sign of the kite was his personal marque taken from an old English guild, long extinct but known in its day for furniture of high quality. Working primarily in the Chippendale, Heppelwhite, Queen Anne and Federal styles, Starnes produced, over the course of forty years, an estimated five thousand pieces of furniture. Today Kitemark pieces can be found in private homes and antique shops throughout America and in several foreign countries.

Contained in this volume is a biography with photographs as well as a photographic section containing over eighty full color images of the varying styles and types of furniture produced by Starnes from 1959 until a few months before his death. Also included here are several chapters from Period Furniture Techniques which formed the basis for a series of articles written in the 1980s for DELMARVA HEARTLAND magazine in which Starnes explains through text, illustrations and photographs how to execute several classic techniques used in the production of eighteenth century furniture.

Written and produced in a collaborative effort by Starnes’ three sons with photographs by noted Delmarva photographer Eric Crossan, this volume is a lasting tribute to a modern master of period furniture making.

“The book is a treasure of Ron’s life and a wonderful catalogue of his life’s work.” —Walter W. Surratt

“This book will make you laugh, cry, and give you an insight into a truly remarkable man.” —Dan Starnes
